Grottes de Lascaux
The Lascaux-Montignac region, where our hotel is located, is best known for its wall paintings dating from 20,000 to 17,000 B.C. They are the finest known example of Paleolithic art and were discovered quite by chance.
In 1940, near the village of Montignac, an old tree collapsed during a storm. Its fall uncovers an opening that 18-year-old Marcel Revidat's dog Robot discovers during a walk. At first glance, the hole looks like a foxhole, but it turns out to be the entrance to a prehistoric gallery.
Today, only a handful of scientists have access to the cave, and only in special suits. Since the 1980s, a faithful copy (Lascaux II) has been erected for visitors near the original cave, in which 90% of the paintings have been reproduced.
To better understand the complex history of these paintings, we invite you to come to our hotel in Montignac and visit Lascaux II in person.
Since 2016, Lascaux IV has opened its doors, where you can admire the total reproduction of the cave.
